William “Bill” Percy Moore, Jr. of Hopewell, died Thursday, July 1, 2004 in Harrogate, England. He was born February 29, 1924 in Salisbury, North Carolina, the son of the late William Percy and Sallie Wetmore Moore. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by Anne Swart Moore and son, Andrew Rosser Moore. In 1945, Mr. Moore received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University and in 1956 he earned the degree of Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Richmond. During World War II, Bill worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN and in 1963 he was elected a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He retired from Allied Chemical Corporation as Director of Development in 1974. At the time of his death he was Vice President of ATG, a research company. The research of William Moore resulted in numerous patents that enhanced the chemical industry during his tenure with Allied Chemical Corporation and other patents that improved the development of products for the environment, humankind and animals. His research was ongoing until his death. Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, Vera “Curly” Williamson Moore, of Hopewell, a son, William Brogden Moore, of Monterey, VA, a daughter-in-law, Mary Katherine Moore, grandchildren, William Andrew Moore and Elizabeth Anne Moore, all of Cary, NC, and a sister, Mary Bland Aldredge of Salisbury, NC. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 11, 2004 from 5:00 to 7:00PM in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, July 12, 2004 at 11:00AM in First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Willard Wash, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church, Columns Fund, 6th Avenue @ West Broadway, P. O. Box 636, Hopewell, Virginia 23860.
