William James Phipps, 85 died peacefully at home Sunday morning, November 23, 2008 with the love of his family. He was a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, graduating from McKenney High School then attending University of Richmond. His career was in the lumber business, working with McCoy Lumber, Greensboro, N.C.; Ezell Lumber Company, Lawrenceville, VA; and lastly as manager of Woodlands Division of Chesapeake Corporation, West Point, VA. As an avid gardener and bird hunter, he owned numerous Llewellin setters and planted acres of lespedeza and partridge peas in Dinwiddie Co. He was predeceased by his wife Louise Richardson Phipps, his parents Ella Bobbitt Phipps and Frederick Wilmer Phipps, a sister Mary Phipps Robertson, and his brother Frederick Wilmer Phipps, Jr. He is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Phipps Dodge and her fiancé , Monte Treasure and a son, William James Phipps, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna John Phipps; six grandchildren, Steven Douglas Dodge, Molly Edmunds Dodge, James Richardson Dodge, William James Phipps, III, Virginia John Phipps, and Byron Mason John Phipps; a sister, Sarah Phipps Flagge and sister-in-law, Almentine Phipps. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery, McKenney, VA . The family expresses sincere appreciation to his faithful caregivers, Doris Beasley, Geraldine Dean and Lucille Garnet Campbell.
