William Edward â??Rockâ? Spain, Sr., 87, of Petersburg, passed away Sunday January 18, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard Samuel & Hattie Felts Spain and his loving wife Patsy Wayne Spain. He was the former owner operator of Washington Street Exxon Station in Petersburg for 39 years, after retiring, he was employed by Ukropâ??s Grocery for 12, years. Rock was a veteran of the United States Army, served during WWII, and played baseball on USO Baseball teams with Joe DiMaggio. He is survived by his son William E. Spain, Jr. & wife Susan of Petersburg, grandson; Damon Anthony Spain of Richmond, sister; Constance Thomas of Prince George, numerous nieces & nephews. A graveside service will be held in Blandford Cemetery January 20, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev Robert Livesay of Oakland Baptist Church officiating.
