William "Bill" Young II, 86, of Sutherland, VA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on April 20, 2024. He was born on April 6, 1938, in Clarksburg, WV, to William and Margaret Young. Bill married his life-long sweetheart, Phyllis Marie Payton, soon after high school.
He began his career in law enforcement, serving as a State Police Officer in West Virginia, before relocating to Petersburg, Virginia, where he became a valued member of the Petersburg City Police Department. After his tenure in law enforcement, Bill transitioned into sales, working for Southside Candy, until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus Council 694.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Margaret Young; and his son, Dane Scott Young. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Phyllis Marie Young; three children, Craig (Shannon) Young, Rodney (Kary) Young, and Kim (Scotty) Harvanek; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Young; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Bill found joy in supporting his grandchildren at their sporting events, cheering them on with enthusiasm and pride. He also had a special place in his heart for the Virginia Cavaliers, following their games with passion. A lover of pets, Bill cherished the companionship of his faithful animal friends throughout his life, with his latest companion, Sebastian, remaining by his side until his passing.
Bill will be remembered for his determination, his commitment to his family and community, and the impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Family will receive friends on Friday, April 26, 2024, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM. We will celebrate Bill's life with a Requiem Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 1:00 PM. Interment will immediately follow the service at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery.
