LT Willie Elbert Barton, U.S. Navy RET, 80, of Wakefield passed away peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2011. Elbert was born and raised in Jasper, Alabama, joined the United States Navy in 1948 where he spent over 22 years serving his country in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After retirement from the service he was an instructor at Walker Technical College in Sumiton, AL and was a Primitive Baptist minister. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Armstrong and Mary Lena Barton; and his infant son, Steven Elbert Barton.
Willie Elbert was the beloved husband of Willie Latane Barton for over 60 years. He will be forever remembered by his wife and loving children, Linda Marie Carmean and husband, Russell, Shirley Ann Dietz and husband, John, Michael Alan Barton and wife, Susan and Susan Renee Murray and husband, Kevin. His treasured grandchildren, Yvonne Carmean Tate, Christopher, Kenneth, and Brittany Dietz, and Griffin, Owen and Tighe Murray and two great grandchildren.
He and his wife moved to Wakefield, VA from Jasper, AL in 1999 where he continued his love of foxhunting, fishing and spending precious time with family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at Albert G.
