Willie Eugene Cooke, 88, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville FL following several months of declining health.

Eugene was born in Surry County on October 6, 1920, and resided for most of his life in the family home in Dendron until the fall of 2008. Eugene was living with his nephew Carson Meadows and his wife, Sivilla, in Fernandina Beach FL at the time of his death.

He retired from Southern Construction Co. in 1982. Eugene loved hunting, fishing, and observing wildlife. He was a member of Belleview Hunt Club and the Old Guard in Surry County. Eugene was a veteran of World War II, and served in the U.S. Navy from June 1942 until his Honorable Discharge in November 1945. He was a Radarman 2nd Class, and served on the USS Almaak and USS Alchiba in the North African and Pacific Campaigns. Off the coast of Portugal during the early morning hours of November 12, 1942, Eugeneâ??s ship, the USS Almaack, was struck by a torpedo fired by the German U-boat U-155. Valiant efforts by the damage control team saved the ship from sinking. Two other ships in the convoy were sunk. Eugene was always proud of his service to his country during the war. He was truly a member of the â??Greatest Generation.â?
