Peebles, Winifred Morris (Billie), 93, a former resident of Wakefield, died on March 20, 2009 at Lakewood Manor where she had lived for the past 13 years. She was born in Wakefield on August 27, 1915 and was the daughter of the late Madeline and Wilbur Alvyn Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Benjamin Peebles and her sister Ann Morris Richardson.
She is survived by three children, Madeline Peebles Brown, and her husband, Rodney, Patricia Peebles Thaxton and her husband, H.C., all of Richmond, and Robert Alvyn Peebles, and his wife, Mary Jane of Louisville, KY; three grandchildren, Mark Peebles Brown, and his wife Guen of Mercer Island, WA, Chandler Thaxton Klevana, and her husband, Leighton of Richmond, and William Eppes Thaxton of Brooklyn, NY; and four great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Leighton Klevana and Stuart and Jack Brown. She is also survived by two step-sisters, Jean Morris Foster and Sandra Morris Taylor.
Billie graduated from Wakefield High School and attended Radford College (now Radford University). She was a life-long member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. She was a former member and past president of the Wakefield Womanâ??s Club. She was a member of the Thomas Rolfe Branch, APVA, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Mayflower Society.
A graveside service will be held in the Wakefield Cemetery on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 2:00PM. There will be a memorial service at Lakewood Manor on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wakefield United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 87, Wakefield, VA 23888 or to the Wakefield Foundation, P.O. Box 8, Wakefield, VA 23888. The family would like to give special thanks to the nursing staff at Lakewood Manor (3rd floor Healthcare) for their loving care.
